BIOMASS ENERGY:
One of the most remarkable systems for bio-energy recovery was developed by Anheuser-Busch to treat the wastewater from its St. Louis brewing operations. The system simultaneously reduces solid waste and generates fuel, using bacteria to consume organic compounds in the dirty water. The bacteria produce methane that is captured as it bubbles to the top. The system uses 80 percent less electricity than a conventional treatment system, and produces a renewable source of energy that supplies up to 15 percent of a brewery's fuel needs. It has lower capital and operating costs, and releases just half the solid waste. By the 2000, Anheuser-Busch plans to use the bio-energy recovery system in eight facilities, saving more than $40 million annually and 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
